Harvest Boosts Exports

The high rates of grain harvest in the regions serviced by the Volga road – Volgograd and Saratov regions, established since the beginning of the 2020 harvest campaign, made it possible to significantly increase grain export traffic.

In the third quarter of 2020, the maximum grain volume in the entire history of the Volga road was presented, and this is 1.7 times higher than the previous maximum road indicator recorded in April 2017.

In total, 1.3 million tons of grain were sent from the stations of the Privolzhskaya road in the third quarter of this year, which is 0.7 million tons or 126.5% higher than the level of 2019. Of these, the share of exports accounted for 82.3% or 1.07 million tons, which also exceeds the indicator of the same period last year by 0.56 million tons or 110.2%.

In August, Saratov region became the leading region and showed the largest shipment of wheat by rail – 306.7 thousand tons in August, which is 2.5 times (by 185.5 thousand tons) more than the monthly indicators of August last year.

The record level of grain handling was made possible thanks to the implementation of a set of measures. Privolzhsky has organized work to stimulate transportation and guaranteed export of grain cargoes by rail, including a comprehensive renewal of the track facilities, targeted and timely repair work in the places of origin of freight traffic, as well as operational change in the technology of loading stations due to commissioning additional units of traction rolling stock, ensuring round-the-clock operation of stations, increasing the number of line workers during the period of mass presentation of cargo for transportation, implementation of transport and logistics services.

After the lack of elevator capacities in certain regions of Russia in 2017, specialists from Volga Railway developed and implemented a new product – the construction of railway loading points: mini-elevators based on unused property of the Russian Railways holding company. The implementation of the project together with interested grain traders made it possible to introduce additional elevator capacities, increase the transport accessibility of elevators for the sale of grain, both in the domestic and export sales markets, and thereby optimize the existing stock management system without the need for significant investments in the construction of facilities.

Since 2018, four mini-elevators have been commissioned at the Privolzhskaya road landfill. The last project was implemented in September this year; the first five cars with wheat went in the direction of Rostov-on-Don station on September 29 (from the Vozrozhdenie station of Saratov region).

In total, in the third quarter of 2020, 82.1 thousand tons of grain were transported from these loading points, mainly in the direction of the Samur-exp station, destination Azerbaijan.

Six more elevators are currently under construction. The total potential cargo base after the implementation of all projects can amount to 800 thousand tons of grain cargo per year.

Also, in order to optimize the transportation process for both shippers and the carrier on the road, the implementation of existing transport and logistics products continues. Thus, in the context of an increasing demand for grain wagons and transhipment capacities of grain terminals in the Azov-Black Sea basin in the third quarter of 2020, accelerated transportation of grain from the stations of the Volgograd region, where the greatest competition with road transportation is observed, twice. During this period, six grain «Freight Express» were sent.

In addition, grain transportation was organized in a mixed rail-water communication using the potential of river ports in the regions served by the Volga roads. As a result of the overhaul of the Yelshanka station track, located on the territory of Volgograd Elevator LLC, in the third quarter, the transshipment of 22.6 thousand tons of grain to water transport for further transportation by ships to the countries of Central Asia.

Works are continued on the development of the railway transport infrastructure and the expansion of the range of transport and logistics services at the Privolzhskaya road test site.
