The China – Europe – China corridor, at atime when shippers are switching from sea to rail transportation and striving to reduce delivery times and ensure the security of products, allows to attract new types of cargo. In addition to the standard nomenclature – electronics, components for machinery and cars – food, clothing, solar panels, freezing equipment and so on are transported along the route.

The range of goods flowing to China from Europe is constantly expanding. For example, on October 15, a freight train from the European Union arrived in the Chinese city of Xi'an, carrying 82 Audis for import. Volvo, Land Rover, and other automobile brands are being transported along this route. In total about 2.46 thousand Audi cars have been imported over all the time .

However, if earlier the main share of European transit was provided by large shippers such as HP, BMW and Audi, now due to an increase in the total traffic volume along the Europe-China route, their share in percentage terms has significantly decreased, says Alexander Baskakov, Director of Rail Cargo Logistics-RUS.

In addition to the usual cargos that were previously transported from the European Union to the PRC and in the opposite direction, manufacturers can offer unusual or even exclusive goods.

For example, the EU and China has signed a bilateral agreement recently that will protect 100 European and 100 Chinese geographic indicators from abuse and counterfeiting. Due to the contract, European consumers will be able to taste authentic Chinese delicacies. For example, at the end of September, a container train loaded with tomato sauce from Xinjiang departed from Urumqi to the Italian city of Naples.

The trend for the transportation of exclusive goods along the China-Europe-China route was also supported by a container train from Austria to China organized in October, loaded with Lenzing brand eco-friendly cellulose fiber clothing.

Austrian logistics operator Cargo-Partner dispatched a 46-container block train from Linz to Xi'an for onward transportation of cargo to Qingdao (Shandong province).

For the first time, products under the brand «Made in Austria» were shipped to the PRC by rail express from Vienna to Shanghai at the end of August 2020. The train was on the way for 16 days and covered a distance of 10.5 thousand km.

Lenzing and Cargo-Partner have chosen rail transport along the New Silk Road as an environmentally friendly alternative to air and sea transport.

According to Lenzing Senior Vice President Marko Schlimpert, Tencel's proprietary fiber is in demand by fashion-conscious and environmentally conscious Chinese consumers.
«Due to the strong demand from Chinese wholesalers and retailers for environmentally friendly fibers, we ship them directly to our customers in China by rail. This allows us to transport our goods in an environmentally friendly manner and also ensures that the goods are delivered to our customers in China twice as fast as by sea», he emphasized.

According to Aleksey Grom, Director General of United Transport and Logistics Company – Eurasian Railway Alliance JSC (UTLC ERA), this is not just exclusive clothing from a fashion brand – it is also an environmentally friendly product with a certain philosophy.
«And the railway certainly advises this philosophy as the most environmentally friendly transport. It is the only mode of transport that has almost continuously reduced CO2 emissions since 1990 while increasing traffic volumes», he emphasized.

It should be noted that the volume of emissions from the transportation of the same amount of cargos by rail is 4 times less than sea transport, 85 – automobile and 53 – aviation.
Undoubtedly, an important tendency along the China-Europe-China route is the departure of special trains loaded for cargo of a specific category. These are trains for e-commerce products, automobiles, or certain foodstuff.

So on September 1, a special B2B export train for international e-commerce was arranged from Chongqing, and on September 6, a train with 5,000 refrigerators and freezers was sent from Hefei to Durj.

In addition, since April this year, the Chinese company Longi has started transporting photovoltaic modules for solar panels from China to Europe by rail. In October, the company dispatched the 18th train with this cargo from Hsinchu Station in Xi'an towards the EU.
«It used to take over 40 days to get from China to Europe, but now the delivery time is no more than 20 days», said Li Wenxue, Vice President of Longi Green Energy Technology.

Longi's photovoltaic products were originally exported by sea. However, after the outbreak of the new coronavirus infection, the number of delays at foreign ports has increased. To stabilize the global supply chain, the company has switched to rail transportation and has no plans to return to shipping.
«Trains with one type of cargo are preferable for a number of reasons. Such cargo has uniform conditions of transportation and storage, it is faster and easier to process documents for it. Such trains are also of interest to recipients, since they can immediately receive a large volume of goods, that is, there is no need to buy the missing volumes of cargo at the market, contact other suppliers», noted Dmitry Baranov, leading expert of the management company «Finam Management».

Regarding the specific figures, we can note an increase in shipments from Europe to China of timber and wood products – 5.6 thousand tons. TEU (+ 263.42%), fruits and vegetables 238 TEU (+ 376.00%) and clothing – 34 TEU (+ 750%).

In addition, this year there is an increase in the following product categories sent from China to Europe – plastics and products from them 14.8 thousand. TEU (+ 167.58%), finished textiles – 7.1 thous. TEU (+ 256.14%), optics, devices, medical equipment – 7 thous. TEU (+ 107.13%), rubber and industrial rubber goods – 1.1 thous. TEU (+ 189.66%), perfumery, cosmetic and toilet products – 572 TEU (+ 116.67%).
